Information on the download file formats and bitrates

The downloads at www.vinyl-distribution.co.uk are offered in different qualities and file formats.
This overview is supposed to help you finding the best format for your needs:

MP3 format

MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3) was the first popular file format for lossy audio compression and is supported by most of all software and hardware audio players.
The higher the bitrates of the MP3 file the better the audio quality but also the larger the file. A bitrate of 192 kBit/s matches the quality of an audio CD as far as possible. With a bitrate of 320 kBit/s there is hardly any difference between the original file and the MP3 file.
Within the MP3 file are information on artist, title, album and even the album cover artwork is included. This helps organizing the files in your music library.
If you are not sure which format is the best for you, MP3 is a very good choice.

MP4 / AAC / M4A format

Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) is compared to MP3 a newer and more sophisticated file format but it is not supported by all software and hardware music players.
We deliver MP4 files with a variable bitrate with an average of 250 kBit/s which is equal or even better than an MP3 file with a bitrate of 320 kBit/s.
Also MP4 files contain information on artist, title, album and cover artwork which helps organizing the files in your music library.
If your hardware and software music players support MP4 files, this format is a very good choice. For example Apple iTunes® and Apple iPods® support MP4 files.

FLAC format

Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC) is a lossless audio compression format. This means there is no decline in audio quality at all, therefore the file size is larger compared to MP4 or MP3.
A FLAC file is at an average of 50% smaller than the original WAV file, depending on the music style it can be only 30% though.
Also within the FLAC files information on artist, title album and artwork are stored, but not all players are capable of displaying this information.
Unfortunately all in all FLAC is only supported by very few hardware and software players, but if your player does support FLAC und you want to have lossless compression, this is the best choice.

WAV format

The WAVE file format is a lossless format without any compression. This format is used by the labels for file delivery to us.
By choosing WAV file format you will receive the same file which we received from the labels.
However: Within WAV files no information on artist, title and album is available which can make the organization of you library a little more effort and of course WAV files are the largest amongst all offered file types.
